I need to just say this up front: The Doctor's House might be my favourite venue in Ontario to shoot, and this gallery is still one of my all time favourites, full stop. The house itself dates back to 1867, and the chapel tucked into the garden is connected to the main building by an actual underground tunnel, which is the kind of detail that still gets me every time I walk it with a couple. That chapel seats up to 140 and somehow manages to feel both grand and completely intimate at once, cathedral windows, dark walnut beams, chandeliers, but none of it stiff. Past the chapel, the gardens roll back toward a ravine, and that's where I get some of my favourite portrait light all year. Charlotte & Andrew
Charlotte and Andrew described themselves to me as adventurous, tender, and fun, and their June 20th wedding at The Doctor's House was all three at once. They've been together since they were fourteen, and that kind of history shows up on a wedding day in ways you can't fake, an ease between two people who genuinely know each other all the way through. With 130 guests, they built a full garden party, laidback and playful, nothing stiff, nothing overly produced.
Andrew and the groomsmen arrived in a rented car they'd timed perfectly, and there's something about a group of guys trying to look casual while they're obviously buzzing that always makes for the best candids. Charlotte got ready with her bridesmaids in that same warm, easy energy, lots of laughing, someone's mascara running before the ceremony even started.
The ceremony happened in that chapel I can't stop talking about, and the small, specific moments were the ones that mattered most, the first kiss, the bell ringing, the walk back out into the garden light. Charlotte and Andrew asked for a quiet minute together right after, just the two of them taking in what had happened before the day pulled them back into the crowd, and that handful of seconds ended up being some of my favourite frames from the whole gallery.
Cocktail hour turned into an actual party of its own, guests playing bocce on the lawn, a photo lounge that got more use than most first dances do. Then there was the frolicking, Charlotte's word, not mine, but it's the only word for the two of them running through the gardens by the ravine, completely unposed, laughing at nothing in particular. Every detail of that day had been chosen or made by hand, and it showed. Nothing about it read as dramatic or overly cinematic, it just felt warm. Nostalgic, a little soft around the edges, exactly the kind of day two people who've loved each other since they were kids would build for themselves.
